Keyword Research: A Simple Mistake to Avoid

This is just an update to one of my earlier posts on keyword research. I would like to bring up a point on referring to local monthly searches as this is huge mistake many can make (I just did for my niche site) while selecting your keywords/niche. If you’re looking at how to do keyword research, I suggest you read up on the below posts as the are comprehensive and will help you perform in depth keyword research:

  1. How to Do Keyword Research
  2. Keyword Research: Long Tail keywords
  3. 5 Free Keyword Research Tools
  4. 5 Mistakes to Avoid During Keyword Research

Anyways, coming back to the point I would like to make with the local monthly searches..here is what I would like to share with you all:

As an example, I’m using the keyword “Briefcases” which has a lot of searches and a decent CPC

Google Keywords

Firstly, always check the “Exact box” on the left of your screen to get an accurate figure of what you’re getting into. Secondly, Focus on the Local monthly searches of the keyword – as you can see the word “Briefcases” has around 4400 searches in the United States with a CPC of $1.61

Now, check this screenshot.. the difference is the location. I’ve changed the location to “India” and you can see that the local monthly searches and CPC has reduced drastically.

Pointers to Take Home from This:

1. Select “Exact Match” always

2. Do remember to check out the “local monthly searches” for the keyword you’re targeting and  the relevant “CPC”

I’d be glad to hear on any points that you have on the mistakes we make during keyword research. Since, this is a basic fundamental step, it really is important that we dwelve into details before finalizing on your targeted keyword.

I used adwords for a long time, and blasted out to many different countries. All that did for me is make my bounce rate very horrible. People that cannot read english, or understand the videos in english, are likely to bounce fast.
