As part of building my niche site, one of the things that I’ve faced constantly is google dance. The past few months has been a huge learning curve in terms of off page and on page SEO. I’ve got to agree that getting a page to rank high in SERP’s is not a easy task. It requires a lot of patience and effort. Currently, the keyword I’m targeting ranks at position 11 (page 2 of SERP’s) and for a while it goes to position 10 (page 1) and flows back to position 11. There are times it also goes out of google SERP’s and then come backs to position 11, all this is a google dance and it keeps taking place when you build up a lot of backlinks.

So, what Exactly is Google Dance?

Google dance is a fluctuation in SERP’s that a new or existing site goes through. For a new site, the fluctuation is because of the reason that the google is figuring out where to place your new site. While, for an existing site – this seems to happen when you do a lot of SEO work in terms of backlinking. I’ve experienced that gaining too many links in too little a time leads to a lot of fluctuation in SERP’s.

Although nothing concrete can be said on how to avoid the fluctuations, one of the best known ways is to have a diverse backlink profile. You can build a diverse backlink profile by using the following methods:

1. Blog Commenting
2. Web 2.0 Article
3. Article Directories
4. Article Marketing through Article Networks
5. Social Bookmarking

I also wanted to inform you that I’ve followed the above including using a link magnet to build backlinks to my niche site and im still on position 11…still pursuing to solve the mystery behind high google ranking..hopefully the path will be shown to me someday.

This is just an update to one of my earlier posts on keyword research. I would like to bring up a point on referring to local monthly searches as this is huge mistake many can make (I just did for my niche site) while selecting your keywords/niche. Anyways, coming back to the point I would like to make with the local monthly searches..here is what I would like to share with you all:

As an example, I’m using the keyword “Briefcases” which has a lot of searches and a decent CPC

Firstly, always check the “Exact box” on the left of your screen to get an accurate figure of what you’re getting into. Secondly, Focus on the Local monthly searches of the keyword – as you can see the word “Briefcases” has around 4400 searches in the United States with a CPC of $1.61

Now, check this screenshot.. the difference is the location. I’ve changed the location to “India” and you can see that the local monthly searches and CPC has reduced drastically.

Pointers to Take Home from This:

1. Select “Exact Match” always

2. Do remember to check out the “local monthly searches” for the keyword you’re targeting and  the relevant “CPC”

It is important to understand that search engines note the IP from which a website is hosted when reviewing a link. This is done in large part to detect link manipulation patterns. Too many links from a single IP is an indicator that all those sites have the same owner. To help prevent link farms, search engines have been known to discount links from the same IP address.

So when you get a link from a particular site, it is assigned a particular IP address. If you get a link from A website, let us say it sends you 80 units of link juice. The next link you get from that IP may only send 20, and the next 10, and the next 5, then 2, then 1, then 0.5, and so on. These are estimated numbers, but help explain the concept Below is a graph that explains this better:

So Why Does This Matter?

This will help you re consider your link building methods. If you are using a method that gets links from the same places over and over again, they will begin to get discounted . For example, the first few articles you publish in a article directory will carry some weight, but those links will get less and less effective with each new article. Your authority growth will stagnate if you do not diversify your link sources though. This is why you should not simply use the same link building methods continuously.

So, if you want to run 10-15 websites and think that it will help linking those sites together. It won’t until you get 4-5 different web hosts as they all will have different IP classes. So, the conclusion is that backlinks from 5 blogs on 5 different hosts is worth more than 5 blogs on the same host!

How we use this – If you’re a frequent visitor on my blog – you would have learnt that we’ve discussed on Social Monkee. You could basically, pull out the report to get the backlinks once the submission is complete and ping the URL’s where the backlinks are placed.

If you’re using directory submissions to build backlinks or using blog commenting as a link building strategy, it’s a good idea to take those URL’s and ping them, so that the backlink gets recognized.

How to Use Ping Farm

1. Go to pingfarm.com
2. Cut and paste your URL’s into the first box, or upload your text file. Ensure you place one URL per line.
3. Scroll down to the “Services to Ping” section and click the “MASS PING!” button.

Off late I’ve been dwelling a lot into keyword research and trying to dig down deeper into what actually works. In one of my earlier posts on this blog also provides details on How to do Keyword Research.

Today, as part of my in depth research I decided to take one of most popular posts How to find CommentLuv, KeywordLuv & DoFollow Blogs using The Free Blog Commenter and go to Google Analytics to find out what were the keywords through which search engine visitors where reaching the post, as google analytics states – Entrance Keywords

When this post was written, the target keyword was The Free Blog Commenter, How to Find CommentLuv Blogs & How to Find Keyword Blogs

Results – The page was viewed 343 times via 150 keywords. That’s a whooping 150 unique keywords used to enter that link through Google SERP’s.

Here is a snapshot of the 10 Entrance Keywords

The Point: This goes to show that up to 70% of all searches online are unique – one time searches. This means that we only have 30% or so of the listed searches, no matter what keyword tool we use.

So by selecting keywords for article topics that makes sense for human readers, and mixing that article with a lot of two and three word theme words & phrases, you are planting many more seeds for your website than you can imagine.  If you want to understand more about two and three theme words and phrases you can refer latent semantic indexing. This will ensure that your articles get the maximum exposure that they deserve.

The most important and difficult part of SEO  is building backlinks. Everyone always asks how to get links to their site that will get them ranked higher and drive more traffic to their site. Use articles to build links for individual pages that target long tail keywords. Use it to build for your domain as well, but article marketing can help you achieve multiple page one rankings by building links for low competition long tails.

Anchor your links – It is important to include your keywords in your anchor text.

Vary your anchor text. You need to mix up your anchor text so it looks natural. Do a few submissions that include your exact anchor text, but then do several submissions that include variations and related long tails of your primary keyword.

Target your articles – Links pass more authority if they come from related pages. The more related the page’s content, the higher the quality of that link. I suggest including your keywords in both the title and in the first 100 words. Then use related keyword throughout and close the article with the keyword.

Conclusion

Articles are a great way to get links, but it is important to remember that they are low quality links. They work well for niche sites and long tails or as part of your overall link strategy. They should not be your only way of link building. Because these are low quality, they may take a long time before they are “counted”. Some may never show as counted. Do not stress this though, just get your links and move on. Let Google and Yahoo count them on their own time, because you cannot speed it up.

If you’re looking at targeting keywords to get traffic or make that sale, there are some basic rules that you need to follow while writing your posts. Yes, it is undeniable that building backlinks will help you rank that post high up in Google SERP’s, but first you need to cover the following to ensure you target the desired keyword accurately.

7 Simple Steps to Target Your Keywords

1. Use Keyword in Title – This is simple and easy to do on a blogging platform like WordPress. The keywords you’re targeting should be in your title and near the beginning. If you want to rank for it, you need to put it in your title

2. Anchored Inbound Links – As soon as you post it, go and get some links to it. Go submit an article to get some low level links coming in at least. Share it on social sites. Links are still the biggest ranking factor. If you want to target a keyword, you must work on this metric more than your on-page metrics. After the title,  we consider this the second most important

3. First 100 Words – Get that keyword near the beginning of the post/page. Set the stage for the search engine by using the keyword in your first or second sentence. This is also a good writing practice, because it allows your readers to quickly know what you’re going to write about

4. Keyword Usage in Body – Try to use your targeted keyword at least once in the middle of your page. Search algorithms are more sensitive to pages that do not contain the keyword they’re getting links for. Do not spam the keyword, Just use it a few times to make it look natural

5. Last 100 Words – Sum up what you’ve already said in the beginning of your post and use the targeted keywords

6. Headers – Take advantage of header tags. If the page it about X keyword, than that keyword should be in that page’s headers. At very least, use H1 and include you keyword. If you can, include an H2. And lastly, only have one H1 per page.

7. Keyword in URL – It’s not too important to have the keyword in your domain, but since you have direct control over the page URL, you should try to include a keyword in its URL.
